Sharp XL-HP500 3-Disc Executive Microsystem

Sharp XL-HP500 3-Disc Executive Microsystem Review

Sharp XL-HP500 3-Disc Executive Microsystem Feature

  • Stylish compact stereo with tray-loading 3-CD changer and single-well autoreverse cassette deck
  • 30-preset FM/AM digital tuner, high 50 watts per channel power
  • Magnetically shielded speakers for placement near computer monitors or televisions
  • Stereo analog-audio input accommodates DVD player, MP3 player, or VCR
  • Sleep timer and record/playback timers let you fall asleep and wake to music; includes full-function remote control
Offering CD, cassette, and radio listening from a single small but powerful system, Sharp's silver XL-HP500 compact stereo will look and sound great in the office, den, bedroom, or living room. Its fluorescent color display keeps track information and time of day in easy sight, and the system offers a built-in alarm clock with associated sleep timer, recording timer, and playback timer so you can fall asleep and wake to your favorite music.

The XL-HP500's hefty 50 watts per channel will make your CDs sound great in small to medium-sized rooms, when you're cranking them up and when you're playing them quietly; an overshadowed benefit of high power is that you get full sound, even at low volumes. You can listen straight through a disc, set the player to repeat, or set it to play random selections.

Load up to three CDs at a time and listen to them continuously, in random mode, or one at a time--you can even swap out two of the discs while the third is playing. The system's two-way speakers are magnetically shielded to allow distortion-free placement near TVs or computer monitors. Detachable grilles expose the speakers' generous 5.125-inch woofers, dome tweeters, and bass-enhancing ports.

The single-well cassette deck offers full-logic controls and autoreverse playback for hands-free extended listening. The 30-preset FM/AM digital tuner automatically scans available stations for easy programming. Use the X-Bass circuit to boost the speakers' bass output, or choose from among five preset equalizer curves to tailor the sound to your preference.

A dedicated subwoofer output facilitates hookup with an external (and optional) powered subwoofer to fill out your music's bass frequencies, while stereo RCA analog-audio inputs accommodate an external device like a DVD player, MP3 player, voice recorder, or VCR. Want to listen in private? Plug a pair of headphones (not included) into the unit's .125-inch headphone jack. This system is Energy Star compliant, meeting all guidelines for energy efficiency.

What's in the Box
Main unit, two speakers, an FM/AM antenna, a full-function remote control, remote batteries, a user's manual, and warranty information. Stylish, compact, and powerful, this executive micro system is perfect for any office, den, or bedroom. With 100 watts of power (50 W + 50 W), a 3 CD changer, and a full logic cassette deck, this executive micro system is a perfect audio system for any environment.

Panasonic SC-PM03 Executive Microsystem

Panasonic SC-PM03 Executive Microsystem Review

Panasonic SC-PM03 Executive Microsystem Feature

  • CD player with MASH 1-bit digital-to-analog converters
  • Digital synthesizer tuner with 24-preset memory tuning
  • Multifunction remote control
  • 2-way speakers with acoustic lens
  • High-quality design with metallic finish and blue LCD screen
Compact size, sophisticated design, and solid performance are standard with Panasonic's SC-PM03 executive micro system. The small footprint and great sound together bring you a system that enlivens any home office, bedroom, or kitchen.

The motorized tabletop CD drawer simplifies disc loading. You can adjust bass and treble from the remote to get just the right sound from your listening position. The soft-blue LCD screen blends with any decor, and clearly displays the time and important disc and station information, even in low light.

The system's two-way speakers are honed by an acoustic lens, a carefully shaped front panel designed to deliver expansive, natural sound across your listening area.

The digital AM/FM stereo tuner digitally processes FM and AM radio broadcasts, locking in on the signal to avoid drift and reduce distortion. The tuner also fosters simple storage of 24 station frequencies (12 FM, 12 AM) in convenient presets.

Last, but not least, the play timer will start playing a preselected source at a time of your choosing. A sleep timer automatically turns off the power after a preset time period so you can drift off to sleep to the strains of your favorite music. Micro-systems, which are just slightly smaller than mini-systems, are basically the smallest stereo systems you can buy. Panasonic's SC-PM03 is the less expensive of the two micro-systems in its lineup. The two music sources are a CD player and a digital AM/FM tuner. Like most micros, the SC-PM03 has a single-play, rather than multiple-disc, CD player. The digital tuner has 12 FM and 12 AM station presets, for a total of 24.The speakers are the real surprise. The cabinets, rather than the typical plastic seen in micros, are particle board, and have a faux-oak finish. Panasonic's Super Woofer system, with a biamp design, consists of a separate amplifier for the woofer and tweeter in each speaker. There's also an "acoustic lens" on the tweeter, a feature borrowed from professional public-address systems that optimizes the way the tweeter disperses sound. The company couples this system with the Sound Virtualizer, which is a digital signal processor (DSP) that is intended to widen the soundstage. Other nice features of this system include play and sleep timers, bass and treble controls, a dimmer for the blue LCD display, and a remote control.

Fisher SLIM-1500 Executive Microsystem

Fisher SLIM-1500 Executive Microsystem Review

Fisher SLIM-1500 Executive Microsystem Feature

  • Measures 21.3 by 13 by 3.8 inches (W x H x D) without pedestal
  • Detachable 2-way speakers
  • 5 watts per channel
  • 10-key direct-access remote
  • SureWake for a graduated wake-up level
When fashion is as important as performance, the Fisher Slim-1500 compact stereo proudly steps to center stage. Catering to real-world fashion ideals, the Slim-1500 is true to its name, offering a CD player, a digital AM/FM tuner, and detachable two-way speakers--all with a profile less than four inches thick.

The unit's pedestal is perfect for placement on top of a desk or cabinet, though other setups work as well. Using the included mounting bracket, you can hang the Slim-1500 like a picture, or you can dispense with the pedestal, unhook the speakers, and enjoy a more discreet appearance and wider stereo separation on a bookshelf or cabinet. (Click on the "See more pictures" link at the top of this page to view the stereo with detached speakers.) If you want the wide stereo effect without the wider speaker array, you can use the Slim-1500's surround button, which generates a more spacious and reverberant sound to simulate a wider stereo spread.

The Slim-1500 is certainly no heavyweight in the sound-quality department; physics take a fast toll on sound quality when you start reducing the available speaker space. If the looks of the Slim-1500 appeal to you, though, the tradeoff is probably a favorable one--the sound is by all means decent, if a little flat, and the bass and treble controls provide some latitude for tailoring the sound to your preference. The unit can play fairly loudly, but bass-heavy material such as rock music will audibly distort at lower levels than you might expect.

Fisher implements a number of thoughtful design features in this system. For starters, the Slim-1500 doubles as an alarm clock (with either radio or CD) and offers a feature called SureWake. SureWake lets you set a low listening level to fall asleep to at night (with automatic shutoff after 10 to 90 minutes) and also works with the alarm by gradually increasing the volume to room-filling levels at wake-up time.

Especially cool is the inclusion of a pair of front-panel RCA-type jacks that, at the touch of a button, you can switch to serve as either inputs or outputs. This flexibility permits you to record from the Slim-1500's CD or radio to a cassette or minidisc recorder; you can also simply listen to your cassettes through the Slim-1500 when it is hooked up to an external deck (though we can't help wishing that the Slim-1500 included a cassette deck). The unit even includes a subwoofer output in case you want to jack up the low end with an external powered sub for more visceral musical involvement.

The Slim-1500 also includes more typical features, such as 20-track programming for the CD player and 30-station presets for the tuner. On the downside, while the blue LCD screen shows CD track numbers and timing, actual time, and radio stations, it doesn't show volume level or bass and treble settings--even when you're adjusting those features. And since the tone controls are plus/minus buttons rather than knobs, you have to adjust tone controls by ear.

While most of the Slim-1500's operations are intuitive, its method of loading CDs is not. You must set discs in the opened tray; when you close the tray's door, the discs pop into place. (Don't attempt to mount a disc directly on the black spindle.) The Slim-1500's remote is easy to use and well laid out, though take heed: its AA batteries are not included. --Michael Mikesell

Pros:

  • Stylish appearance
  • Independent bass and treble controls
  • RCA input and output
  • Subwoofer output
  • Intuitive layout

  • Detachable speakers/pedestal
  • Well-designed remote
  • Spacious surround effect

  • No cassette deck
  • No display for volume, bass, or treble settings

Sharp XL520 Executive Microsystem

Sharp XL520 Executive Microsystem Review

Sharp XL520 Executive Microsystem Feature

  • Two-way shielded speakers
  • Full-logic cassette deck
  • Front-panel optical digital output
  • Full-function remote
  • Preset equalization (EQ)
We recommend Sharp's XL-520 shelf system as a great low-cost upgrade to a bedroom, studio apartment, or dorm room. The system includes CD and cassette players, AM/FM tuner (antenna provided), and magnetically shielded two-way speakers that you can place near a TV or computer monitor without disturbing the picture. Working in tandem with the speakers is a two-channel line input on the back of the main component that can easily accommodate a VCR or PC audio output.

The speakers are fairly well balanced--not too bright, not too boomy or muddy--but all the same, an adjustable tone control would be nice. As it stands, the system comes with three preset EQ settings besides flat (no EQ): a bass mode that adds a little low end to the presentation, a mode that boosts the extreme low and high frequencies, and a mode that rolls off the highs (useful for softening particularly hissy tapes or noisy radio broadcasts).

One feature of the XL-520 that is unique to systems at this price is an optical digital output. Accessible from the front panel, this feature allows recording from CD to other digital media--such as MiniDisc or even a PC hard drive--where the digital feed can be compressed to MP3 or other reduced-storage audio formats.

The full-function remote is highly convenient in allowing you to adjust the volume, EQ, sound source, play mode (repeat or random), 20-track programmable memory, or sleep/timer all from the comfort of a bed or couch. When the memory is programmed but not playing any CDs, the display window shows the total time of the programmed material.

Pros:

  • Shielded speakers can be placed near TV or computer monitor
  • Auxiliary input can accept feed from VCR or PC
  • Digital output helps with compilations on MiniDisc or MP3
  • Volume control on remote

Cons:

  • Cassette sound is below par
  • No adjustable tone controls
Speakers dimensions: 14.13x13x13 27.5llbs (This is each speaker separately)

Panasonic SC-EN17 CD Micro System

Panasonic SC-EN17 CD Micro System Review

Panasonic SC-EN17 CD Micro System Feature

  • MP3 playback and digital re-master for higher-quality MP3 reproduction
  • New motorized open front panel for easy disc changing
  • Rich Bass and Clear Vocal with PP mica cone speakers
  • CD-R/RW playback
  • Multi CD Function (Random, Program, Repeat)
If you're looking for a compact system that can really rock, then look no further than the Panasonic SC-EN17 CD Micro System. Play music your way with the built-in CD player that's loaded with functions. You can listen to songs at random or program the system to play tracks in whatever order you desire. And your listening pleasure doesn't have to be limited to your CD collection. Tune into your favorite radio station with the digital synthesized AM/FM tuner. Browse the airwaves with the auto scan tuning feature to find all the best local stations, then save up to 32 of your favorites using the preset memory.

The SC-EN17 will also play your favorite CD-R/RW and MP3 recordings. When MP3s are created, higher frequencies are lost due to the limited frequency response of compressed digital audio. Most of these frequencies cannot be heard by human ears, but their presence conveys subtle nuances. When they're missing in a digital recording, the music just doesn't sound quite the same as the live performance. Panasonic has developed a multi re-master feature that examines the audio signal and helps compensate for these lost frequencies, providing a better sound quality that is closer to those coveted original performances.

There is no need to get up off your couch with this micro system. Keep yourself parked wherever you're comfortable and navigate the SC-EN17 with the included full-function remote control. And if you decide to take a midday snooze, you don't have to worry about oversleeping because the system doubles as an alarm clock.

And the high-quality 2-way bass reflex speakers ensure that you will hear every detail from your favorite music and movies.

The CS-V720 is packed with features, from the XM ready tuner* that gives you access to over 150 channels of digital quality audio to enhanced control of your iPod when used in conjunction with our optional DS-A1 Remote Interactive Dock. All of this technology is available packaged in a sleek looking, compact system that can be used in any room of the house or office. Audition one today to hear and see what you have been missing.
* Requires optional antenna and paid subscription.

Key technology Features and Supported FOrmats:
192 kHz/24bit AD Converters: Costly, extremely powerful digital-to-analog converters , that not only boast a dynamic range of 120 dB, they process information faster and are virtually resistant to clock jitter, to ensure the best possible performance from DVD-Audio, DVD-Video and audio CD.

DVD-Audio: Prepare for the concert of a lifetime! 5.1 channel DVD-Audio combines multichannel high-resolution audio with video, song lyrics and more. While discs that carry this logo must be played back in DVD-A equipped machines to unleash their full potential, many are compatible with conventional DVD-Video players as well.

JPG: JPG is a standard image format used in today's digital cameras and personal computers. DVD players that carry this logo are able to read CD-R/RWs that contain JPG image information and display slide shows on your television (such as recent vacations, family photos, etc.).

RI (Remote Interactive): With Onkyo’s exclusive RI (Remote Interactive) system capability, you can integrate and operate all compatible components through a single remote control. What’s more, RI capability enables you to simply connect the iPod® to your receiver through Onkyo’s RI Dock for the iPod (DS-A1). Your iPod effectively becomes another Onkyo component from which you can relish a fuller sound that just can’t be experienced through headphones. RI capability will also give you remote operability of your iPod for hands-off control over your digital music.

Plays WMA: This audio compression format from Microsoft® allows you to reduce the size of your audio files for storage on your computer’s hard drive or portable devices. This allows you to store many more songs than with uncompressed CD audio, using the same amount of disc space or memory. For example, a standard 650MB CD can hold more than 200 songs in WMA format. Various bitrates allow for higher or lower quality, depending on the desired sound quality of the final recording.

CD Video: This format, known as Video-CD (VCD), is commonly used for karaoke, to produce home movies, and slideshows, with menus and other special on-screen graphics.

MP3 Playback: This audio format achieves about a 10:1 compression over conventional CD audio. What does this mean? You can store many more songs using the same amount of space. For example, a standard 650MB CD can hold more than 200 songs in MP3 format. Various bitrates allow for higher or lower quality, depending on the desired sound quality of the final recording.

SACD: Are you ready for a brand new music listening experience? 5.1 channel Super Audio CD represents the best music has to offer. Direct Stream Digital™ recording technology is a drastic improvement over Compact Disc, both in technology and sound quality. Thanks to multichannel sound, it doesn't just appear as if the musicians are playing in your living room. It sounds as if you're transported from your living room into the original performance space.

WRAT (Wide Range Amp Technology): Imagine turning up the volume and filling your entertainment room with noise-free, impressively powerful, true-to-life sound. That's the benefit of Wide Range Amplifier Technology. Originally developed for our most expensive high-end amplifiers to handle the sonic demands of today's digital age, you'll now find WRAT even in our lowest-priced A/V receivers. The WRAT family of technologies includes a broader frequency range with lower noise entering the signal path – perfectly suited for new high resolution DVD-Audio and SACD formats.

XM Ready: The XM "Connect-and-Play," is a revolutionary technology platform designed to integrate XM into virtually any home or portable consumer electronics entertainment device. By matching XM Ready® audio systems with a simple, elegant antenna/receiver, getting XM becomes even easier for home audio listeners.

DTS Surround: DTS® is a discrete 5.1 channel audio format for movies and music. Unlike its Dolby® Digital counterpart, DTS uses less compression for its audio encoding.

Dolby Digital / Pro-Logic II: Dolby Digital is a discrete 5.1 channel audio format for movies and music. Pro-Logic II is the latest improvement on the original Pro-Logic standard. Pro-Logic II provides a full-range signal to the five main channels, in addition to a subwoofer channel. This creates a realistic surround environment from a two-channel source, such as CD, Tape, FM Radio, etc.

VLSC: Conventional D/A conversion methods reduce digital pulse noise at the conversion stage but can’t remove it completely. Previously only found on our high-end components, VLSC (Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry) employs a unique D/A conversion circuit to overcome this problem. Data is converted between sampling points and these points are joined with analog vectors in real-time to produce a smooth output wave form. The result — a virtually noiseless, smooth analog signal based on the digital source to bring out even the most subtle of nuances in your music, movie soundtracks and even MP3s!
